A San Francisco City Hall Elopement on film

Some days feel quiet in the best way. Autumn and Caleb’s San Francisco City Hall elopement in January was one of those days. San Francisco City Hall has a way of making even the smallest celebrations feel monumental. The marble staircases, soft light pouring through the tall windows, and the echo of footsteps across the rotunda create a sense of calm that feels perfectly suited for an intimate wedding. For Autumn and Caleb, it was exactly the kind of space they wanted to exchange their vows.

Their day was simple and intentional — just the two of them, a few meaningful moments, and the beauty of City Hall surrounding them. I photographed the entire elopement on a mix of 35mm and medium format (120mm) film, which felt like the perfect medium for a day like this. Film has a way of slowing everything down. Each frame becomes more deliberate, more thoughtful, and in turn the moments feel even more present. The softness of the light against the marble walls and the quiet emotion between Autumn and Caleb translated beautifully on film.

After their ceremony, we wandered through the different floors of City Hall, stopping wherever the light felt right. Some of my favorite moments were the in-between ones — Autumn adjusting her dress on the staircase, Caleb holding her hand as they walked through the corridors, the quiet smiles they shared when they realized they were finally married.

January in San Francisco brings a softer kind of light, and inside City Hall it filtered gently through the windows, creating the kind of atmosphere that feels timeless on film. Autumn and Caleb’s elopement was a reminder that weddings don’t have to be large to be meaningful. Sometimes the most memorable celebrations are the ones that feel the most personal: two people, a beautiful space, and the simple act of promising forever.
